Neil and I were invited to go to the Tehran Symphonic Orchestra to listen to a symphony specially written for the celebration of 30 years Islamic revolution.(feb 11 2009)
When we arrived there was a lot of police and we had to leave our bags in a bus in front of the theatre, an odd place to leave your bag with camera, money and telephones in it since you could easily drive away with all the odies….
Than we were searched on our bodies by the entrance and women and man had different entrances. We have seen lots of theatre and it never was like this. We got a bit nervous…what is happening?
It turned out that President Ahmadinejad would attend the concert…..
And it so happened that he sat right underneath us, since we were on the balcony…..Neil and I got all giggly and nervous….especially when we heard that only people from the gouvernement were in the audience, and we twere the only foreigners but lay people as well. It struck me that a gouvernement is nothing else as a social network as couscousglobal or Facebook. By the way, Facebook and youtube work here suddenly. I posted my first movie an hour ago...second one failed again....

Anyway the music was rather overwhelming and interesting, so we forgot that we were 8 meters from the president sometimes.
There were lots of revolution sound effects, like shouting and shooting which made it rather surreal, bodyguards and audience looking around where the sounds came from..;)
It was an interesting mix of Western and Eastern music, a classical orchestra with suddenly 40 doughs coming from all entances of the theatre. A dough is a sort of very big handdrum..beautiful sound. There were also women singing in the choir, something which is mostly forbidden.
At the end Ahmadinejad thanked the orchestra and said that music should be more used in social things….a revolution in itself.
Than we had to pick up our bags from the bus, who thankgod did not drive away with all the goodies….
We had to perform quit a fight to get them in all the chaos, but hey since we are travelling everything is an adventure.
maartje nevejanhttp://www.couscousglobal.com/id/176ARTICLEnews
