We meet McCain at Miami University
3-11- 2008
One day to go for decisionday..
And again Florida will be decisive...The state is preparing itself with the ame regulations as with a hurricane.
I spend the whole day at Miami University with Alex Pixly as my wonderful assistant to talk with the Republican students and meet McCain at the rally at midnight.
Check out he movies…
This morning in the Miami Herald:
Florida Polls McCain: 46% Obama: 50%
Nation. Polls McCain: 46 % Obama: 53%
Obama was in Cleveland tonight with Bruce Springsteen.
McCain was in Miami with lots of Salsabands, amongst them Grammy Award winning Albita. 70 % of the republicans in Miami are Cubans.
Hip hopstarts Jay-Z, Sean “Diddy” Combs and Mari J. Blidge were doing the Democrat thing in Florida to get the young African Americans to vote tomorrow.
So we were in the McCain camp with the most friendly host you can imagine Harout Samra, chairman of Miami Young Republicans.
The hip cool thing is to be for Obama. We see lots of T shirts and stickers from Obama, but none of MacCain. We spoke to a young reporter who says that he saw only one McCain button on campus the whole election time.
While speaking to students we hear that you need a lot of courage to be openly for McCain: you will be spit at and o-ther students even make the Hitler Greetings if you wear a Tshirt of him.
So it is really Latino’s and (jnon NYC) jews for McCain.
Most of the youth, intelectuals and blacks for Obama.
But they are convinced that lots of young voters will actually vote for McCain in secret, and that is why they do not trust the polls.
Arguments I heard the most aginst Obama:
He will bring us Socialism, Communism with spreading he wealth.
He is brininging this country down because he is a babykiller and for gaymarriage
He will censor us, he threw 3 journalist out of a lane yesterday because they were critical about him, that is how it started with us in Cuba in 1959. We do not want that anymore.
All the immigrants are forMcCain…we al own small buisnessess and believe in the American Dream.
Obama is what we fled for but he doeshave better designed T shirts, although the style is very Russian/Chinese Communisti Propaganda like.
Obama has all this money for he Campaign, we Republicans do not, and still they are so close. It means that people really believe in McCain and hate Obama’s wealth. We are the hard working Americans.
Obama is to young, he will have a big problem with his ego later. McCain is tested he is experienced. We need a great leader in these difficult time.
So Alex and I were from 2-2 on the Campus in Miami and vey imressed with all the people we met and the atmosphere. Contrary of what we thought, being in the McCain camp while the whole world is watching Obama, had somewhat of being with the underdag, being proud of making a change with less money, less prestige and lots of courage….actually all the things we thought we would feel in the Obamateam…but they are much more careful and rational.
While we, on a rainy night in the predominantly Cuban American Crwd of 8000 people all dancing on Latin Music, making a canival with signs, red pompoms and hips swaying to pulsing beats for hours, were intoxicated with the emotions of all these Latino’s with a great lust for life, the USA and freedom.
What nobody believes anymore just ight happen on the last moment: as the little man said himself: The Mac is Back…..
As Europeans we are also afraid of so much crazyness at the rally….we still have the echo’s of hugh crowds cheering a leader so loud in our ears…
Americans can just go all the way in their enthousism.
At two in the morning we are dropped of at Southbeach by a friendly Polish reporter. We walk to ur favorite 24/7 restaurante newscafe and pass a totally naked man in a black cape while at the newscafe a limousine stops filled with beautiful red light district ladies on incredible high heels.
Alex and I order beer and pasta we are starved, not having eaten since breakfast. Our favorite Haitian waitress greets us like locals: “Bonjour…comment ca va?”.
